Could You Have More Toxicity Than Your Husband?
Apr 04, 2025
Did you know that women’s bodies process toxins differently than men? While the cleaning process is the same for both sexes, women are best supported by an intentional approach to cleansing. This includes hormone support, drainage pathway strengthening and proper elimination.
If you’ve ever struggled with sluggish digestion, bloating, stubborn weight, or hormonal imbalances that you feel your partner never experiences, this might help explain why. Let’s dive into how a woman’s body functions differently from a man’s —and how we can optimize cleansing for vibrant energy, clearer skin, better digestion and balanced hormones.
Could you have more toxicity than your husband?
Your Hormones Affect Your Drainage Pathways
The menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause play a BIG role in how the drainage pathways work for women. These hormonal processes are governed by estrogen and progesterone – and the liver and colon are a part of the regulation process. The liver and the colon are also the queens of the body’s drainage system. If both are congested and unable to process estrogen effectively, the whole body is affected.
Women are more prone to estrogen dominance (where estrogen is not properly cleared through the liver and/or the bowels). Hello, bloating, fatigue, PMS, and weight gain! Poor detoxification of estrogen can be a contributing factor to hormone-related conditions such as breast tenderness, PCOS, endometriosis and heavy periods. Plus, many of the extra estrogens we are dealing with are xenoestrogens - coming from a toxic environment. As you can imagine, women can quickly become massively burdened.
In contrast, men’s drainage pathways are not as influenced by hormone fluctuations. Testosterone, which is higher in men, generally supports muscle mass and metabolism, which enhances certain detox functions (like the liver and the bowels) because they are running at a higher rate, unencumbered by excess estrogen.
Liver Detoxification Differences
Did you know that your liver has TWO detox phases?
Phase 1 (Breakdown): Toxins are broken down by the liver into metabolites.
Phase 2 (Elimination): The metabolites are neutralized and excreted.
Phase 1 tends to be more active in women than in men, because our livers are ready to process the amounts of estrogen that our bodies can produce. However, if phase 1 is working great and phase 2 is kind of slow, this can sometimes create a backlog in phase 2 – a backlog can lead to toxin buildup, especially if bowel movements aren't happening on the regular.
To support a woman’s body, the drainage pathways MUST be open and any constipation needs to be 100% resolved.
Toxins Tend to Accumulate in Fat
Women naturally have higher body fat percentages (around 20–30%) compared to men (only 10–20%). This is what allows women to sustain a healthy pregnancy and nurse a baby. However, the bad news is that the modern world is pretty toxic and fat cells store toxins, especially fat-soluble toxins like pesticides, plastics and heavy metals. So, women’s bodies may store more toxins than men’s do.
Heavy Metals & Environmental Toxin Sensitivity
Women are often more sensitive to heavy metals (like mercury and lead) due to their effects on hormonal balance. Plus, women are often more exposed to heavy metals in their beauty and personal care products, which contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Men just don’t traditionally put on as many creams, make-up and scents on their bodies. Avoiding fragrances and chemicals is a great way to reduce your exposure to these toxins. Look for organic self-care items, make-up, and menstrual products.
Menstruation is a Beautiful Detox Pathway
Maybe it seems unfair that women are more sensitive to toxicity and can have a more challenging time processing it. Nature, in her perfection, has provided a perfect answer. Women are amazing because they naturally detox through menstrual blood, which can help eliminate heavy metals and other toxins. Cleansing can absolutely happen during menstruation and may help to optimize this natural pathway of elimination. Men, obviously, do not menstruate, so this gift is not available to them.
How Women Can Help Support Detoxification
- Liver Support: Offerings like herbal bitters, dandelion root, milk thistle, castor oil packs, coffee enemas
- Gut Health: High-fiber foods, diversity in the diet, targeted-to-you probiotics, castor oil packs, regular bowel movements
- Hydration: Water with lemon in the morning, FEMfusion, raw milk, mineral-rich broths
- Sweating: Exercise, sauna, dry skin brushing to help eliminate toxins
- Hormone Balance: First morning light (every day!!!), eating enough, proper macros (within the context of eating enough – eating appropriate ratios of protein, carbohydrates, and fats), ensuring regular bowel movements, liver support, and strength training.
Women are incredible and give so much.
Cleansing is a way to give back to yourself.
Women detox differently due to hormones, fat storage, metabolism and liver function. Also, because of exposure, women may carry higher levels of toxins. Supporting detoxification through liver health, gut health, hydration and hormone balance is key for optimal well-being.
