Why is My Child Having Accidents at School?
Aug 28, 2024Starting a new year of school can be a big transition for kids. There are many changes that are happening as they start a new grade, meet a new teacher and have more responsibilities. Sometimes kids can start having accidents at school during periods of transition.
Why is My Child Having Accidents at School?
When a potty-trained child suddenly starts having pee or poop accidents, it’s most likely because they are constipated. Even if they are going to the bathroom daily, this type of communication points to severe constipation.
It’s NOT because they are too distracted from playing. Or because they are too lazy to go to the bathroom.
Attending school is a BIG transition for many kids and with big transitions comes STRESS. Stress keeps the body from FULLY digesting and detoxifying. Also, there can be “stress” when using a bathroom outside the comfort of home. Think about how easily your digestive system can be “thrown off” by changes in life, busy schedules or even going on vacation.
Here’s how to help your kiddo from a FEM approach:
Step 1:
Address the stress and use one or more of the transition supporting tools mentioned in my previous post, “Supporting our Child with Back-to-School Transitions”.
Collect more information. Pay close attention to how often they are eliminating and what it looks like. You might have to ask them to show you before they flush at home.
Step 3:
Address the constipation. Start with the basics and make sure that they are getting adequate hydration, plenty of saturated fats (50% of diet), fiber from veggies and fruit, plenty of magnesium and potassium (coconut water is great). Castor oil packs over the belly can be used for 10 to 20 minutes.
Step 4:
Consider bodywork from a neurological-focused chiropractor to support the body in shifting out of the stressed state. (https://pxdocs.com/)LINK
Step 5.
If the communication persists, work with a naturopathic practitioner to customize a plan that can get to the root cause. No matter what, DO NOT EVER, EVER give Miralax. It’s not safe or effective for kids and has neuropsychiatric side effects including tics, anxiety, rage, paranoia, phobias, mood swings and depression.
You can help your child to heal from chronic constipation
Implementing the steps above can heal chronic constipation - and the root cause of the accidents. This will ease the stress they may be feeling around bathroom issues at school. Start to normalize bathroom conversations at home so that your kiddo feels safe and comfortable discussing what their body needs.
