One of the Biggest Deficiencies I See in Toddlers and Growing Children
Jun 25, 2024The most important food group for your growing kiddo is fat. ESPECIALLY in the toddler years when their brains and bodies are being formed. This is definitely one of the biggest deficiencies I see in toddlers and growing children.
Fat is a Sacred Food
Fats nourish the brains and the nervous systems of growing children. For fat, we want to prioritize saturated fat (ghee, butter, coconut oil, animal fat, whole raw dairy) but consume monounsaturated fat (olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds) in moderation. Fats should be from high quality, organic sources. Animal fats should be grass-fed and raised with love.
How Much Fat Does My Child Need?
The average toddler takes in approximately 1,500 calories each day, he needs about six tablespoons of fat per day to obtain 50-55 percent of his calories as fat, which can come from butter, egg yolks, meat fat, coconut oil, whole raw dairy products, olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds. Protein and fat go well together, so don’t discount your animal fat as part of this offering (think chicken thighs, chuck roast, etc.).
You Can Never Go Wrong with Just Adding Extra Butter!
Butter is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K2, which are needed for the development of the brain and body. It is also rich in cholesterol, and lecithin, which is needed for the utilization of cholesterol. It contains DHA, which is crucial for brain development and function. Offering your toddler butter breaks (snacks of grass-fed butter throughout the day) can help reduce sugar cravings, stabilize mood and optimize digestion.
In Children, The Most Important Macro is Fat
The goal is NOT to focus on calories but to focus on the macros that are most needed to support the growing child. For children, the macro priorities in descending order are fat first, then protein and then carbohydrates.
