How to Heal Diaper Rash Naturally
Jul 26, 2024Diaper rash can cause so much stress as you’re trying to figure it out! It can be an occasional thing or it can be chronic. You’ll know chronic diaper rash because it never really goes away; it disappears only to pop up again! This is a communication from the gut, not the “skin”. The same babies who get chronic diaper rash might be prone to flare-ups from certain foods or even during teething. Over the years, I’ve had a lot of opportunity to see what works. Here are my top tips on how to treat diaper rash naturally.
Support the Gut
To support gut health, be sure to not introduce solids until 7 months. If using formula (raw or conventional), enzyme support is super important. Give space from any grains until at least a year, and then make sure they are properly prepared (soaked, sprouted and/or fermented).
Treat the Yeast
If the diaper rash is yeast/fungal overgrowth (which can often happen after antibiotic usage), the rash will be much more red and inflamed looking and will have well defined patches. Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic strain that can be an amazing ally for healing! It can be used both internally and topically.
Use caution before deciding to use antibiotics and if you do, make sure you start a flora-rebuild protocol immediately. The effects of antibiotics aren’t always immediate, but weakness can show up years after taking them.
Antibiotic usage needs to be taken with utmost care and a flora rebuild protocol should be put into place immediately. The effects of antibiotics are not always immediate, and we can see weakness continue to present years after administration.
Here’s My Step-By-Step for Treating an Active Rash:
First, check your diaper and your wipes. Baby’s skin is super sensitive and most conventional disposable diapers come with chemicals and fragrances. Even if you’ve been using a certain brand of diaper for a while, it can still be the problem. Reactions aren’t always immediate and toxins accumulate. If you use cloth diapers, check your detergent, or see if it’s time for them to be stripped.
Change diapers frequently and offer your baby PLENTY of naked baby time. This is a lovely offering whether diaper rash is present or not.
Naturopathic Remedies:
Calendula salve is my favorite go-to for acute topical support. Super charge the salve with Cell Salt #9. Just take out a couple of tablets, mix with a tiny bit of water and add to the salve then apply. You can also offer a tablet of cell salt #9 internally a couple times a day.
Getting Babes in a Dirt Bath is Amazing for the Skin.
Internal Herbal Support
Red Clover tincture is a super gentle yet effective way to support the blood and lymph. This can be offered internally 2 to 5 drops several times a day to support the body in moving the toxins out.
Dig Deeper if the Rash Doesn’t Resolve
Most diaper rashes will improve after a few days of intentional support. If the problem persists, it’s time to dig deeper with healing support. If you feel like your baby is super sensitive, this is where a comprehensive stool analysis with a practitioner to interpret the results and create a custom protocol would be beneficial. The earlier you interpret the communication, the faster healing will happen.
Babies don’t grow out of chronic diaper rash, it just evolves into something else.
