How to Stay Hydrated in the Winter

Dehydration can be surprisingly common during the winter. Why? During the colder months, even when you're not sweating, you lose water through the skin. Plus, the air from indoor heating can cause you to become dry without even noticing. Many people also drink less in the winter. Regardless of the temps outside, hydration is important for health all year round.

So, here’s how to stay hydrated in the winter.

Dehydration can occur when the body doesn’t have enough fluid to function properly. Being dehydrated will negatively impact your energy, mood and detoxification ability. It can lead to headaches, constipation and frequent cold/flu communications. And - most of all - it negatively impacts your minerals.

But, drinking water is not enough!

That’s because there is a big difference between drinking water and actually being hydrated. It is COMMON for my clients to be chronically dehydrated - even though they drink plenty of water.

AND - as you might have guessed, this is a very big deal.

Here are some of my favorite tips for staying hydrated in the winter:

  1. Try drinking warm fluids rather than cold water when it’s cold outside. Sipping on warm FEMfusion (try a FEMfusion latte), herbal teas, raw milk or bone broth can count towards your hydration.
  2. Drink clean, filtered water, but always make sure you add real salt (minerals) back to the water. It’s amazing what happens when you start adding the minerals back in!
  3. Carry a glass or stainless steel water bottle with you everywhere you go to encourage hydration throughout the day. Send your kiddos to school with their own water bottles so they can stay hydrated easily.
  4. Homemade soups made with bone broth and homemade stock in winter are full of minerals and can increase fluid intake. Inside of Fiercely Empowered Mama, we have amazing soup recipes in the Real Food Vault!
  5. Avoid too much caffeine which contributes to fluid loss and dehydration. Caffeine is a natural diuretic which means it flushes water, minerals and electrolytes from your body. Trade in your morning coffee for a coffee alternative like Dandy Blend or a mushroom-based coffee or try FEMfusion!
  6. Make hydration a routine! Start by drinking a glass of warm water with lemon first thing in the morning. Carry a bottle of FEMfusion with you as you go about your day. If hydration is always within reach, it's so much easier to meet your hydration goals.

Staying hydrated may seem simple, but this one change can shift the health of your entire family quickly.  By focusing on both nourishing and mineralizing options, your hydration efforts will actually reach the cells and make a big difference in the body’s ability to function well.
